Pulled from the water, dried in the winter sun
Water hyacinth grows in plenty within five kilometres of the village. We use the stem, dry it, and store it for the rest of the year. Dried, it turns soft and flexible enough to braid.

Why water hyacinth
Water hyacinth spreads across a lake like a green lid, blocking light and starving the water of oxygen. We work with local communities to clear it from the water, dry the stems in the winter sun, and weave them into something useful. Removing it helps the water body recover. Weaving it creates livelihoods for village communities.

Production runs from a central facility in the village with shared tools and materials. The rest of the weaving happens at each artisan's home, so they can earn a living and still tend to the house.
